Undergraduate Programs

Parami Liberal Arts and Sciences Fund supports online undergraduate degree programs under Parami University, which are configured to be accessible, innovative, and tailored to the needs of students from diverse backgrounds, particularly those from conflict-affected regions.

Parami University was initially planned to be a residential liberal arts and sciences university in Burma to foster conscientious leaders and change makers. After the 2021 military coup, the University quickly transitioned into an online education institution and offered continuing education programs to address the needs of thousands of students during the subsequent school closures.

Youth in displacement and conflict situations face many barriers to education due to onground instabilities. To enable these youth to access education, many institutions turn to short-term skills development courses and third-country education pathways as possible solutions. However, as we witness prolonged conflicts worldwide, education in conflict situations can no longer be considered a temporary measure. We have to begin investing in long-term systematic solutions to give youth and their communities a tangible future.

With this in mind, Parami University pursued licensing from the Higher Education Licensure Commission (HELC) of Washington, D.C. to deliver formal undergraduate degree programs online to youth in conflict-affected communities in their places of refuge. The University launched its first online associate degree and bachelor’s degree programs in August 2022, after successfully obtaining the provisional license from HELC in June 2022.

As of 2024, Parami Liberal Arts and Sciences Fund is supporting around 250 learners enrolled full-time in the Parami University undergraduate programs. Working with Bard College, New York, and as a member of the Open Society University Network, Parami University brings quality higher education to students in the global south, focusing on removing structural barriers to access and equipping students with the knowledge and skills they need to become change makers.

The liberal arts education at Parami University is designed to equip students with critical thinking skills, a strong foundation in liberal arts, and the ability to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts. By fostering an interdisciplinary approach, the University aims to equip students to become leaders and problem-solvers who can navigate the complexities of today’s global landscape.

Licensure by the D.C Government

Although non-formal education opportunities exist for displaced, refugee, and migrant students from Burma and the global south, it is almost impossible for them to access recognized university education. Recognized education opens many doors to employment, further study, and other opportunities. As a licensed institution in Washington, D.C., Parami is uniquely positioned to offer recognized undergraduate education via advanced education technologies.

Partnership with Bard College

Through partnership with Bard College, New York, students will receive dual AA and BA degrees. As long-term institutional partners, Bard College and Parami University work to create quality educational opportunities for students in prolonged crises.

Membership in the Open Society University Network

Parami University is also an institutional member of Open Society University Network (OSUN), a global partnership of higher education institutions working together to address transnational issues. Through OSUN universities, Parami students gain access to education programs globally and are exposed to students in different parts of the world. Parami students actively participate in the programs and activities organized by the OSUN member institutions both in-person and online.

Massive online courses

In addition to formal undergraduate programs, the Fund also supports synchronous and asynchronous massive online programs that facilitate continuing education (lifelong learning programs) and higher education access. Below are some of the courses that have been offered for free or for a nominal fee for learners in Myanmar and the global south.
